Asking for More Pay: A Simple 5-Step Script

Many people accept the first offer because asking feels risky. In most cases, a respectful ask does not cost you the job, and it can be worth thousands a year.

The Script

• Research the pay range for the job in your city first.
• Thank them and show you are excited about the role.
• Ask for a specific number: "Based on my experience and research, is there room to reach $X?"
• If pay is stuck, ask about the rest: a sign-on bonus, more paid time off, or a pay review at 6 months.
• Get the final offer in writing.

What Not to Do

• Don’t say "whatever is fair." It lets them start low.
• Don’t make up other offers.
• Don’t give ultimatums unless you would truly walk away.
